This module offers a comprehensive introduction to academic study and professional skills necessary for the IT industry. It covers all facets of university life and the essentials of being an IT professional. You'll have the opportunity to refine both your intellectual and practical skills, engaging with topics like computer-based information systems, e-commerce, and enterprise solutions. The module is tailored to meet the unique needs of LSBU students, preparing you for success during and beyond your time at the university.
Reflection: From this introduction to professional practice and e portfolios, I’ve learned how important my mindset and behaviour are to my success as a student. It helped me see the value of taking responsibility, staying open to feedback, and actively trying to grow. I also realised that an e portfolio isn’t just a collection of work, but a space where I can track my progress, reflect on my learning, and build a record that supports my future goals.
Reflection: I learned that writing a PDP helps me reflect on my strengths, set SMART goals, and plan my academic and career development clearly. From teamwork, I learned the importance of communication, shared responsibility, and managing challenges like free riding. Managing a group project taught me how to plan tasks, organise time effectively, and adapt to problems so the team can achieve its goals.
Reflection: I learned that effective problem solving requires creative, critical, and rational thinking. Creative thinking helps generate new ideas, critical thinking helps analyse and evaluate them, and rational thinking provides a logical structure for choosing solutions. I also learned the importance of clearly defining a problem before solving it, understanding user needs, and working collaboratively within a team. Overall, the fundamentals highlight clear communication, structured thinking, and purposeful solution design.
Reflection: I have learned that user research helps identify real user needs through tools like personas and user stories, ensuring the system is designed around actual problems rather than assumptions. I’ve also learned how technical options analysis allows me to compare different solutions logically—assessing usability, scalability, cost, and integration—to choose the most effective and realistic option.
Reflection: I’ve learned how to communicate ideas clearly as part of a team, design simple and effective slides, and present confidently. I now understand the importance of planning, sharing tasks fairly, and using evidence to support my points. Overall, these skills prepare me for real industry situations like demos, reviews, and interviews.
Refletion: I’ve learned that time management isn’t about squeezing every minute — it’s about protecting my energy, planning ahead so things don’t pile up, and feeling more balanced between studying, work, and personal life. It’s made me more confident and less reactive, and I actually feel I’m working with my time instead of fighting against it.
